CTE Leadership Team Meeting

The CTE Leadership Team met this week to develop and prepare the surveys that will be used in the Comprehensive Local Needs Assessment  process. This years CTE plan will be developed according the new federal CTE legislation (Perkins V).



Apprenticeship Program Presentation

Ernie Conner, Director of Technology and CTE and the Principals at Warren County High School, Warren New Tech High School and Warren Early College High School traveled to Halifax County to participate in a presentation about the Apprentice School in Newport News, Virginia. This institution is interested in partnering with all school districts in the Roanoke River Valley Education Consortium to provide apprentice opportunities for students in the area.








CTE Leadership Presents to District Curriculum Team

Ernie Conner, Derrick Fogg, and Odessa Perry presented the process and procedure that the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has provided to prepare for the implementation of the new Carl D. Perkins federal legislation. A comprehensive local needs assessment must be completed that will receive input from stakeholders in the district and region. Surveys will be made available in the next few weeks for the stakeholders to provide input.








Hydroponics Project in Action

Elevelon Mason worked collaboratively with Stephanie Ayers Business classes to produce lettuce and other plants hydroponically. They grew them without soil and completely controlled the nutrients that were given to the plants. The students developed a business plan to operate a small hydroponics production business. Robotics Class in Action

The robotics class discusses how aerodynamics plays a critical role in the speed and handling of a race car.


Heavy Equipment Operation Class Prepares Students for Careers

Mr. Bobbitt explains how the controls work on the front end loader using a simulator. This equipment has been setup and calibrated with assistance from local industries that use this type of equipment.



VGCC Business Summit

Dr. Mary L. Young, Superintendent, Ernie Conner, Director of Technology/CTE and Odessa Perry, Career Development Coordinator, attended the Business Summit held last week at Vance Granville Community College. This provided an opportunity for Business and Industry partners to meet with K-12 and Post Secondary education to discuss ways to provide well trained employees for the workforce.

Various speakers were on the agenda for the Summit



Gene Lunger, Executive Vice President - North American Retail Operations for Ashley Furniture Industries gave an excellent message to all in attendance. His message was inspiring.  






A panel discussion was held to talk about apprentice programs and opportunities





Break out sessions were held that allowed groups to discuss how they could help fill the pipeline. This group included all K-12 Education participants and VGCC staff.
